Every single person who builds an online course underestimates their future success. You’re modest, and have doubts about what you can accomplish. Can you really pull this off? Are you good enough? Should you quit before you start?
You might be suffering from imposter syndrome, thinking that you aren’t good enough to be “the expert.”
Forget about all that. You ARE good enough to be the expert. You WILL have success. Don’t plan your future on the assumption that you’ll fail. Your Future Self has seen what’s coming, and you’re going to succeed.
Advice from Future Self #2: Assume your customers are going to want more.
Success is in your future, which means lots and lots of happy students. In fact, they’re going to love you so much that they won’t be satisfied with just one course or product. They’re going to want MORE from you.
Just like opening a bag of chips — “Betcha can’t eat just one!” — your students will try one course, then want another. And another.
Be prepared and plan ahead for additional products in your future. Your students might want more advanced course topics, or you might see a need for courses on a different, but related, topic.
Most new online entrepreneurs assume that the product they build today is the only product they’re ever going to create. Not true! Keep your future growth in mind as you’re doing your upfront legwork. Don’t under-plan in the beginning. No horse blinders or tunnel vision for you.
Your students are going to want more, and it’s up to you to deliver.
Advice from Future Self #3: It will get easier as time goes on.
When you’re just starting out, you feel so many things: scared, doubtful, unprepared, confused, scatterbrained, exhausted. You may wonder why you even jumped into the online course pool in the first place.
Don’t worry. This is perfectly normal at the start of any new adventure.
Remember learning to drive? You sat behind the wheel and felt like you were driving an alien spaceship, everything was so confusing and complex. You felt awkward in the driver’s seat, and could barely operate the gas pedal and the windshield wipers at the same time. “How do people do this?” you wondered.
Fast forward a few months or a few years, and driving is as easy as walking down the street. You know what buttons to press, how much pressure to put on the pedals, how far to turn the steering wheel. It’s second nature.
The same goes for your course.
At first, you’ll feel like you’re sitting behind the wheel of an alien spaceship. Nothing will make sense and every choice you have to make will feel overwhelming. But over time, you’ll get into the rhythm. Things will fall into place. And you’ll feel right at home.
Advice from Future Self #4: Invest in the future today.

When you’re starting your first course, you don’t have any experience yet. You haven’t put in the time. So, it’s not fair to compare yourself to people who have been in the business for years. Give yourself the gift of time: time to learn, to work hard, and to rise to the top.
Otherwise, you’ll get frustrated and be tempted to quit.
