What would you say if you could go back in time and give yourself some advice?

“Don’t worry what everyone else thinks.”
“Never go to bed angry, and always say you’re sorry.”
“Start working on your taxes BEFORE April 15th.”

We talk to consulting clients every day who tell us they wish they had known this or that when they first started building their online courses. They would have done things differently if they had known better: from the membership platform they picked, to the way they priced their product, to everything in between.

Now’s your chance to avoid those same mistakes by getting some helpful advice from yourself — five years from now.

Step into our Summit Evergreen Time Machine!

You’ve just traveled into the future. The year is 2019.

It’s time to meet your Future Self, five years older and five years wiser. Your Future Self has some great advice for you as you’re starting out in the world of information products and membership sites. So listen up!

Advice from Future Self #1: Assume you’re going to be successful.

Every single person who builds an online course underestimates their future success. You’re modest, and have doubts about what you can accomplish. Can you really pull this off? Are you good enough? Should you quit before you start?

You might be suffering from imposter syndrome, thinking that you aren’t good enough to be “the expert.”

Forget about all that. You ARE good enough to be the expert. You WILL have success. Don’t plan your future on the assumption that you’ll fail. Your Future Self has seen what’s coming, and you’re going to succeed.

Advice from Future Self #2: Assume your customers are going to want more.

Success is in your future, which means lots and lots of happy students. In fact, they’re going to love you so much that they won’t be satisfied with just one course or product. They’re going to want MORE from you.

Just like opening a bag of chips — “Betcha can’t eat just one!” — your students will try one course, then want another. And another.

Be prepared and plan ahead for additional products in your future. Your students might want more advanced course topics, or you might see a need for courses on a different, but related, topic.

Most new online entrepreneurs assume that the product they build today is the only product they’re ever going to create. Not true! Keep your future growth in mind as you’re doing your upfront legwork. Don’t under-plan in the beginning. No horse blinders or tunnel vision for you.

Your students are going to want more, and it’s up to you to deliver.

Advice from Future Self #3: It will get easier as time goes on.

When you’re just starting out, you feel so many things: scared, doubtful, unprepared, confused, scatterbrained, exhausted. You may wonder why you even jumped into the online course pool in the first place.

Don’t worry. This is perfectly normal at the start of any new adventure.

Remember learning to drive? You sat behind the wheel and felt like you were driving an alien spaceship, everything was so confusing and complex. You felt awkward in the driver’s seat, and could barely operate the gas pedal and the windshield wipers at the same time. “How do people do this?” you wondered.

Fast forward a few months or a few years, and driving is as easy as walking down the street. You know what buttons to press, how much pressure to put on the pedals, how far to turn the steering wheel. It’s second nature.

The same goes for your course.

At first, you’ll feel like you’re sitting behind the wheel of an alien spaceship. Nothing will make sense and every choice you have to make will feel overwhelming. But over time, you’ll get into the rhythm. Things will fall into place. And you’ll feel right at home.

Advice from Future Self #4: Invest in the future today.

Many of our clients wish they had thought about the future before they picked their online course delivery platform.

That’s because their businesses outgrew the capabilities of their original platform, and they had to migrate their systems. Which is a gigantic pain in the butt.

Migrating your system is as stressful as moving into a new house.

Nobody likes moving, do they? There’s a lot of money involved, a lot of time, and the giant headache of lugging everything you own to a new place. It’s no wonder moving ranks up there among the most stressful life events, including death of a family member, loss of a job, and divorce.

Switching from one course delivery system to another can be stressful, too. You spend time trying out new platforms to see what you like best, you spend a bit of money to make the switch, and you haul all your course content, data, etc. to your new platform.

(Disclaimer: Summit Evergreen is the least stressful switch you can make, because we’ve purposefully designed it to be a seamless experience.)

But, the smarter choice is to start your journey with a course platform that can grow with you — instead of a “starter house” that you’ll have to ditch when your business starts to expand.

It can be tempting to cobble together a course that “works okay” when you’re expecting 100 students to buy only one product. But what happens when that swells to 1,000 students? Or 10,000? What happens when you want to offer more than one product, to increase your customer’s lifetime value?

“Okay” just isn’t good enough.

You need a rock-solid system that keeps nervous breakdowns at bay. Here are just a few of the great features you’ll get with Summit Evergreen:

  • A single login for each student, that allows them to access ALL their courses, so they aren’t annoyed with remembering a different name and password for each course.
  • Student feedback surveys that give you valuable data about who’s buying your course and what they like.
  • Analytics that show you who’s logged in and what they’re doing.
  • Modern design templates to keep your course looking fresh, that you can change with a click of a button.
  • Integrations that make it easy for you to connect with your favorite email provider, payment system, and social media platforms.

Summit Evergreen is built to grow with you, with tiered plans that accommodate your needs every step of the way, and built-in features to keep your students happy.

Advice from Future Self #5: Don’t compare yourself to everyone else.

We all do it. We look at someone who’s a big success and we think: “I’ll never be that good. They must know something I don’t.”

Your Future Self is here to tell you: That is simply not true.

The only thing that person has that you don’t is EXPERIENCE.

It’s like the “learning to drive” analogy we mentioned earlier. Let’s say you’re a 15-year-old getting into the driver’s seat for the first time. Would you compare your driving skills to your mom, or your dad, or your driver’s ed instructor? Of course not. That’s ridiculous.

Is it possible for you to become as good a driver as they are? Of course!

The only thing a 15-year-old driver lacks is experience: hard work, determination, and education over a period of time.

When you’re starting your first course, you don’t have any experience yet. You haven’t put in the time. So, it’s not fair to compare yourself to people who have been in the business for years. Give yourself the gift of time: time to learn, to work hard, and to rise to the top.

Otherwise, you’ll get frustrated and be tempted to quit.

Compete against yourself, not other people. Believe in your own success. You WILL get there. You ARE good enough. You DO deserve a premium course platform that will take you the distance.

Do your Future Self a favor and sign up for your free 30-day trial of Summit Evergreen right now. You’ll see how easy it is to create a course you’ll be proud of, even five years from now.
